By war’s end, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) boys had been gone for years, and the Civilian Public Service (CPS) pulled up stakes in 1946. Meanwhile, seemingly every ship and airplane at America’s command brought the troops home. After disembarking, they fanned out across the land to farms, cities, and families. Some went back to jobs, but many (more than 9 million veterans between 1944 and 1949) received $4 billion in unemployment benefits to foster college and trade school education.
The Serviceman’s Readjustment Act of 1944 also established hospitals and low-interest mortgage loans. It was one of the most visionary programs passed during America’s history. It not only created educational opportunities for millions of returning GIs, it also took those millions of young men and women off the job market until the country could convert from a wartime footing to a renewed and vibrant peacetime economy. When coupled with the low-interest mortgage and hospital programs, billions of additional dollars flowed into people’s communities and pockets, which hugely increased demand for goods and services.
Within a short time, many of those same returning servicemen and women sought to go out again into the America they’d fought to defend. Among their highest priorities was the desire to visit or revisit their parks, including Glacier National Park. In 1946, more than 200,000 would enter and experience the “Crown of the Continent.” By the early 1950s, that number had tripled.
