Kids will love this room. It comes with two child-cheering bunk beds and its own bathroom. A slide snakes its way down to the sprawling lagoon-style swimming pool. The tourists there are more families and older couples than young backpacker types. You are a short boat ride away from Railey beach, though, which is famous for young backpackers that come to rock climb, smoke weed and chill on the beach. KYN in Koh Yao Noi is on a Muslim Island, so there will be very little partying and drinking – which may be a good thing! It’ll be nice to be on an island that isn’t popular yet but it may be boring. I haven’t heard anything about the training.

The new Rawai in Khao Lak should be good though, at the time of writing they haven’t finished construction yet and sometimes it’s bad to go before all the bugs are fixed. There likely won’t be many sparring partners in the start, and things like accommodation may have problems. However, Khao Lak is a great area north of Phuket, with quite a nice beach and great scuba diving as it is close to the Similan Islands.

I checked out Jungle Gym, also in the Haad Rin area, but it’s more a weight lifting gym that also offers some Muay Thai on the side – I didn’t train there. If you want to live and train in Koh Phangan I would recommend you train in the Thong Sala area, which is the main town about a 30 minute drive from the Full Moon Party beach. It’s only a 100 baht ($3.33US) shared taxi ride to the party, so don’t risk drinking and driving on a motorbike to go to the party – it’s not worth it and would be stupid to do so. The three gyms I would consider are Diamond Muay Thai, Korba, and Muay Thai Chinnarach. Kobra has its own stadium which is always a good thing if you plan on actively fighting while you’re there. Chinnarach recently built a brand new gym a few blocks away and Diamond has decent reviews.

Since they are all pretty close to each other, near the main pier, I would just get a random hotel for a few nights; then you could rent a motorbike and train one day at each before making any decision on what the best gym is. I’ve considered living and training in Koh Phangan simply because it is such a cool island. The monthly Full Moon Party is seriously one of the best parties in the world, and there are smaller jungle parties every other week. For me, though, I think it would be fun to train all month – as the island is completely dead for 25 days each month – and then go all out for 2- 3 days to let off some during the full moon. I wouldn’t even go down to the party on the night of the full moon itself as it gets too hectic and crazy. The parties on the two nights before would be just fine. I could also work as a Divemaster part-time, as the nearby Sail Rock is a good advanced dive site near Koh Phangan.

From selling my stuff and car I had around $10,000 which I figured would last me around 5 months in Thailand. My goal was to fly back every three months to work for a bit and come back again.

I did that the first time around – just to show everyone I was still alive.

Then I started prolonging my trips home. I stayed overseas for 6 months then, on the next trip, I stayed for an entire year. Ironically during that first three week trip, I blew around $3,000 stupidly. Since then I’ve figured out how to live – and train – for less than $1,000US a month and sometimes half of that.

The trick is to live like a local and think long term Accommodation.

The apartment I’m staying in right now is 350 baht per night (around $11.66US); however, instead of paying nightly, I opted to pay the monthly rate of 4,000 baht a month ($134US).

Best of all it includes utilities, wifi and even once-a -week cleaning with new sheets, bedding and bath towels. If you do the math, paying the daily rate would have been much more than double which means, if you’re going to pay to stay somewhere for 12 nights, you might as well just pay for an entire month – it’ll be the same price.

They know they are the only gym on the island and most of their students are backpackers that don’t know anything about Muay Thai, so they just smile and take your money without putting in much effort. The typical class started with jump rope and what seemed like 5 rounds of boring shadow boxing with no instruction. The pad work was terrible – the worst I’ve had in Thailand. The trainers were lazy and didn’t have any heart. I tried a few different trainers (including the head trainer) and half the round he would be talking to someone else or otherwise not paying attention. Then they would tell you to do 5 rounds on the bags by yourself, also with no instruction. And that’s it!

I wondered what the hell I was paying for, as I could have done that on my own. We also never sparred or clinched. I’m always surprised when I read positive reviews of Island Muay Thai; I even emailed one of the website owners asking him: “Bro, what the fuck man, how could you give Island Muay Thai a good review? You very well know that gym sucks.” He responded, “Yeah, I know, but this is Thailand, you have to remain politically correct.” This is exactly why it’s hard to trust any reviews about gyms.

The other reviews on forums are by guys that never trained at any other gym so they have nothing to compare it against. They had a good time at Island Muay Thai mostly because Koh Tao is a fun island to live on. Hopefully, one day the trainers will develop their love for Muay Thai again and step up their training but, until then, I cannot recommend Koh Tao’s Island Muay Thai to anyone. There is also another “Muay Thai” gym on Koh Tao near the main pier; it’s indoors and really tiny. I checked it out one day but was instantly turned off when the instructor explained their colored belt ranking system to me. What I’ve always loved about Muay Thai is that they focused on what actually works and didn’t have stupid colored belts – like Karate and Taekwondo have, that you earn by wasting your time memorizing hypothetical ‘katas’ and forms. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The only colored belt system that I actually respect is the one in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – for all other Martial Arts it’s just a way to make you think you’re improving so they can keep you as a student, and make more money.

I brought 3lbs of Raw Almonds and 15 bars of dark chocolate. I figure I’m going to eat snacks anyway so I might as well have them somewhat healthy. I also found drinking protein shakes, especially if you mix it with a bit of coconut milk – cheaply available in Thailand and super good for you – satisfies most of my cravings. On my next trip I plan on bringing some beef jerky as well. Sundries and toiletries. You can buy everything in Thailand, often for less money than you would back home with the exception of the following items: Neosporin – this handy antibiotic ointment has a patent that makes cuts heal. There are tons of antibiotic creams in Thailand but none of them actually close up your wounds. I brought three tubes with me, as you get cuts, scrapes and infections all of the time in Thailand – especially while training.

Sunblock – Thais don’t use sunblock, which is ironic because they love to be light skinned. So, this means sunblock is considered a luxury item and costs 3x as much as it does back home. Often there will be whitening bleach in the sunblock here as well, which can’t be good for your skin! Tampons and Condoms – Two things that aren’t readily available or cheap in Thailand – bring your own. Natural products – I brought all of my own toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant and soap as I like to use natural products without a bunch of chemicals in them.

I remember when I was 13 years old and buying my first stick of deodorant. I asked what the difference was between antiperspirant and deodorant. When I found out antiperspirant stops you from sweating, I thought, “That can’t be good for you”. 15 years later, studies come out showing that the aluminum in it causes cancer. The choice is yours – it’s your body – but, personally, I’d rather use products that don’t have a bunch of chemicals, artificial scents, colors and other crap I can’t pronounce in them. I personally use: Tom’s Natural’s – For deodorant and toothpaste (bought anywhere) and Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Peppermint Soap – For shampoo, face soap, body wash, fruit wash and shave cream (bought at Trader Joes).

By adding value to the gym, most owners are happy to give you a discount on training. Every gym that I trained at offered me half off of unlimited training – saving 5,000 baht ($166US) because of my blog, website, and video making skills. Honestly, I would have promoted the gyms regardless of if they gave me a discount or not, since my blog was a personal hobby anyway. Even the gym tours and promo videos I made were all just for fun and because I wanted to help out not because I was ever required to.

Not until writing this my blog did I even consider making a living from my website; however, because of my videos, Phuket Top Team has gotten 38,662 views on YouTube so far, showing potential students what the gym looks like and what the training is like. Tiger Muay Thai has gotten thousands of potential students from reading about my experiences at the gym on my blog, and guys that decided to go to TMT because of it. KC Muay Thai got their gym name promoted to the 10,542 who have watched Mirkko’s fight and saw that he’s training here. Basically, I train at a gym because I like it there; if I think a gym sucks I go somewhere else. Therefore, if I’m somewhere for 3 months, and it’s good, I recommend it to others which I always happily did for free. Then I discovered that – even with the 50% discount – it was still often cheaper for me to pay for 10 classes at a time. Plus, I get to be a paying student and have no financial ties to any gym which is a good thing.
