I checked out Jungle Gym, also in the Haad Rin area, but it’s more a weight lifting gym that also offers some Muay Thai on the side – I didn’t train there. If you want to live and train in Koh Phangan I would recommend you train in the Thong Sala area, which is the main town about a 30 minute drive from the Full Moon Party beach. It’s only a 100 baht ($3.33US) shared taxi ride to the party, so don’t risk drinking and driving on a motorbike to go to the party – it’s not worth it and would be stupid to do so. The three gyms I would consider are Diamond Muay Thai, Korba, and Muay Thai Chinnarach. Kobra has its own stadium which is always a good thing if you plan on actively fighting while you’re there. Chinnarach recently built a brand new gym a few blocks away and Diamond has decent reviews.

Since they are all pretty close to each other, near the main pier, I would just get a random hotel for a few nights; then you could rent a motorbike and train one day at each before making any decision on what the best gym is. I’ve considered living and training in Koh Phangan simply because it is such a cool island. The monthly Full Moon Party is seriously one of the best parties in the world, and there are smaller jungle parties every other week. For me, though, I think it would be fun to train all month – as the island is completely dead for 25 days each month – and then go all out for 2- 3 days to let off some during the full moon. I wouldn’t even go down to the party on the night of the full moon itself as it gets too hectic and crazy. The parties on the two nights before would be just fine. I could also work as a Divemaster part-time, as the nearby Sail Rock is a good advanced dive site near Koh Phangan.

They know they are the only gym on the island and most of their students are backpackers that don’t know anything about Muay Thai, so they just smile and take your money without putting in much effort. The typical class started with jump rope and what seemed like 5 rounds of boring shadow boxing with no instruction. The pad work was terrible – the worst I’ve had in Thailand. The trainers were lazy and didn’t have any heart. I tried a few different trainers (including the head trainer) and half the round he would be talking to someone else or otherwise not paying attention. Then they would tell you to do 5 rounds on the bags by yourself, also with no instruction. And that’s it!

I wondered what the hell I was paying for, as I could have done that on my own. We also never sparred or clinched. I’m always surprised when I read positive reviews of Island Muay Thai; I even emailed one of the website owners asking him: “Bro, what the fuck man, how could you give Island Muay Thai a good review? You very well know that gym sucks.” He responded, “Yeah, I know, but this is Thailand, you have to remain politically correct.” This is exactly why it’s hard to trust any reviews about gyms.

The other reviews on forums are by guys that never trained at any other gym so they have nothing to compare it against. They had a good time at Island Muay Thai mostly because Koh Tao is a fun island to live on. Hopefully, one day the trainers will develop their love for Muay Thai again and step up their training but, until then, I cannot recommend Koh Tao’s Island Muay Thai to anyone. There is also another “Muay Thai” gym on Koh Tao near the main pier; it’s indoors and really tiny. I checked it out one day but was instantly turned off when the instructor explained their colored belt ranking system to me. What I’ve always loved about Muay Thai is that they focused on what actually works and didn’t have stupid colored belts – like Karate and Taekwondo have, that you earn by wasting your time memorizing hypothetical ‘katas’ and forms. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The only colored belt system that I actually respect is the one in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – for all other Martial Arts it’s just a way to make you think you’re improving so they can keep you as a student, and make more money.

I brought 3lbs of Raw Almonds and 15 bars of dark chocolate. I figure I’m going to eat snacks anyway so I might as well have them somewhat healthy. I also found drinking protein shakes, especially if you mix it with a bit of coconut milk – cheaply available in Thailand and super good for you – satisfies most of my cravings. On my next trip I plan on bringing some beef jerky as well. Sundries and toiletries. You can buy everything in Thailand, often for less money than you would back home with the exception of the following items: Neosporin – this handy antibiotic ointment has a patent that makes cuts heal. There are tons of antibiotic creams in Thailand but none of them actually close up your wounds. I brought three tubes with me, as you get cuts, scrapes and infections all of the time in Thailand – especially while training.

Sunblock – Thais don’t use sunblock, which is ironic because they love to be light skinned. So, this means sunblock is considered a luxury item and costs 3x as much as it does back home. Often there will be whitening bleach in the sunblock here as well, which can’t be good for your skin! Tampons and Condoms – Two things that aren’t readily available or cheap in Thailand – bring your own. Natural products – I brought all of my own toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant and soap as I like to use natural products without a bunch of chemicals in them.

I remember when I was 13 years old and buying my first stick of deodorant. I asked what the difference was between antiperspirant and deodorant. When I found out antiperspirant stops you from sweating, I thought, “That can’t be good for you”. 15 years later, studies come out showing that the aluminum in it causes cancer. The choice is yours – it’s your body – but, personally, I’d rather use products that don’t have a bunch of chemicals, artificial scents, colors and other crap I can’t pronounce in them. I personally use: Tom’s Natural’s – For deodorant and toothpaste (bought anywhere) and Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Peppermint Soap – For shampoo, face soap, body wash, fruit wash and shave cream (bought at Trader Joes).

By adding value to the gym, most owners are happy to give you a discount on training. Every gym that I trained at offered me half off of unlimited training – saving 5,000 baht ($166US) because of my blog, website, and video making skills. Honestly, I would have promoted the gyms regardless of if they gave me a discount or not, since my blog was a personal hobby anyway. Even the gym tours and promo videos I made were all just for fun and because I wanted to help out not because I was ever required to.

Not until writing this my blog did I even consider making a living from my website; however, because of my videos, Phuket Top Team has gotten 38,662 views on YouTube so far, showing potential students what the gym looks like and what the training is like. Tiger Muay Thai has gotten thousands of potential students from reading about my experiences at the gym on my blog, and guys that decided to go to TMT because of it. KC Muay Thai got their gym name promoted to the 10,542 who have watched Mirkko’s fight and saw that he’s training here. Basically, I train at a gym because I like it there; if I think a gym sucks I go somewhere else. Therefore, if I’m somewhere for 3 months, and it’s good, I recommend it to others which I always happily did for free. Then I discovered that – even with the 50% discount – it was still often cheaper for me to pay for 10 classes at a time. Plus, I get to be a paying student and have no financial ties to any gym which is a good thing.

If you compare the two breakdowns – staying in the exact same hotel and everything else being equal – it’s only going to cost you $233US more to stay for twice
as long. That’s crazy! If you start factoring in other things like renting a motorbike and food it’ll be even cheaper. The reason why I left food out of the
budget is because you have to spend money on food when you’re back home anyways, and it’s actually far cheaper to eat out 4 times a day in Thailand than it
would be to eat back home in the U.S. Unless, of course, you still live with your parents; however, that’s even more reason to come travel and train – to get
out of the house! Even if you’re not coming to Thailand to do Muay Thai or MMA and are just here to travel, it’s still a far better deal for you to get the
most out of that crazy, expensive airfare – come and stay for a while. Life really shouldn’t be rushed.

The ferry to the neighboring islands of Phangan and Tao will cost 300-500 baht ($10-$16US) and are nice easy boat rides on large comfortable ferries. Even though Koh Samui is the most expensive of the three islands, living costs are still a bit cheaper than Phuket – if you find local places. You can also pitch in with a few friends and rent a luxury villa if you don’t mind spending a bit of cash for something that would be double the price back home. A very nice two bedroom house can be found from 36,000 baht ($1,200US) a month; yet you can still find basic studio apartments for around 5,000 baht ($166US) a month, which what I normally opt for. Koh Samui has some very nice beaches but, unfortunately, because of all of the beach-front development, all of the surrounding coral around the island has been covered with sand and is now dead.

Also, the main port town is quite dirty from the fisherman docking up there. I’ve seen them throw plastic bags full of trash straight into the water off the pier. But, fortunately, most of the rest of the island is really clean and nice. The biggest problem with Koh Samui is the type of tourists that go there. You get a lot of rude, high-end tourists that treat the local Thais like they are below them, which makes the Thais in turn rude back and often see foreigners, then, only as a walking dollar sign. There are a couple Muay Thai gyms in Koh Samui and from what I heard the best is Jun Muay Thai. They also have really good prices for both accommodation and training. You can get a basic fan room to yourself for 5,500 baht a month, and training once-a-day is only 3,000 baht ($100US) per month! Two-a-day training is 5,000 baht ($166US) per month. I’ve always thought that this should be the normal and fair price for Muay Thai in Thailand – but it seems like almost all gyms charge way more. The other gyms in Koh Samui that I would check out are Wech Pinyo Muay Thai, which seems like it might be a good basic Thai-style gym. Superpro Samui also seems decent and is the only one that offers MMA as well. I would also check out Lamai Muay Thai, which is the gym that is affiliated with the World Muay Thai Council and the TV show, ‘The Challenger’. Lamai is the gym a lot of Russians train at.

Anyway, training in Bangkok is best for people that have to be in Bangkok for some other reason – such as work or school – although, I suppose it would also be good for people that love to live in big cities. Fairtex Bangplee and Sitmonchai are regarded as the two best Muay Thai gyms in Bangkok but both of them are a far drive away from the city. Fairtex is around 30 minutes away and Sitmonchai is 60-90 minutes away. The problem with Fairtex is (because they have a famous name) they are also extremely expensive at 18,200 baht ($606US) per week per person for training, a private room with air conditioning and two meals a day. That equates to 72,800 baht a month which is $2,426US. You can share a room with someone else, forgo the ‘aircon’ and save a bit of money but you’ll still end up spending 30,800 baht a month which is $1,026US – either way, it’s over priced and expensive. Sitmonchai is regarded as the best Thai-style training out of any gym in Bangkok, and possibly all of Thailand.

It’s situated in a small, quiet town an hour and a half away from the city, and charges a flat rate of 30,000 baht ($1,000US) a month for training, shared accommodation, 2 meals a day, and they even include motorbike rental which I’ve never heard of anywhere else. You can upgrade to having your own private room for 6,000 baht ($200US) more a month, or you can find an apartment close by for a lot cheaper, although you may have to furnish it yourself. Then there’s Sitsongpeenong, which is around 20 minutes from the city, and is a little bit cheaper than Fairtex for the same package (including your own room, training, and 2 meals a day) at 48,000 baht ($1,600US) per month – still a bit on the expensive side.

A good friend of mine trained at Sitsongpeenong and, although it’s a very nice looking gym, he didn’t recommend it, mainly due to the feel and vibe of the gym and trainers. I’ve heard good things about Fighting Spirit Gym, which only has shared rooms but is significantly cheaper at 14,000 baht ($466US) a month including training. Fighting Spirit doesn’t include food but the food included isn’t worth more than 4,500 baht ($150US) a month anyway; still making it significantly cheaper than the top two gyms. I’ve trained at 13 Coins in Bangkok which used to be the gym of the legendary, Sanchai Sor Kingstar, but ever since he’s left the training and reputation goes up and down – depending on who’s there at the time. The 13 Coins gym is actually better known as an airport resort and restaurant that local Thais often frequent.

The hotel room I stayed at (in 2011) was really nice, brightly lit and the food at the restaurant, although expensive, was really good. However, in recent years the gym is getting old and a bit dated. Training has suffered a bit as well, but they now have an MMA program with a guy named B.K. Brandon Kesler. I would recommend checking out 13 coins if you only have a few days layover in Bangkok. Even though the gym is in the city, there is almost nothing around the area and not that many other people training there, so you might get really bored. In my opinion, the best Muay Thai gym in Bangkok would be Sitmonchai, although it’s quite far outside of the city. Personally, I would live and train there and my blog a hotel in the city every other weekend to get away . The runner up best gym in Bangkok would be Fighting Spirit Gym: for their location within the city center, their low prices, for having MMA/BJJ, and for the fact that they are one of the few gyms that train on Sundays. I’ve heard that the training itself is decent.

Bangkok has the most BJJ schools anywhere in Thailand including 3 Monkeeez Jiu Jitsu, Bangkok Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Bangkok Fight Club, BJJ Boxer Rebellion, EMAC Thailand and Fighting Spirit. There are also quite a few BJJ tournaments popping up in Bangkok, mainly through BJJ Asia.
