History of Kingstown
Kingstown is the oldest continuously inhabited town in the United States. The first inhabitants, the Narragansetts, arrived in 1629, and built a small trading post on an isthmus connecting King’s Island and Long Island. The town was renamed Kingstown in honor of James II of England, who had granted the land to his brother-in-law, Robert Rich, 1st Earl of Warwick. The earl had been appointed Governor of New York by Charles II after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
The town grew slowly due to its remote location and lack of resources. In 1783, General George Washington sent a detachment of troops to help protect Kingstown from British attack during the American Revolution. The town subsequently became an important military and trading center for the region.
During the early 1800s, Kingstown became known as a fashionable resort destination for wealthy New Yorkers. The town’s modern incarnation began in the late 1800s when developers rebuilt it as a seaside resort town. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New York State.
