Protecting Yourself with Raingear

Even if there’s just a 1 percent chance of rain in the area you’ll be visiting, bring a waterproof poncho, rain suit, or other rainwear (a detailed discussion of raingear is found in Chapter 3).

Never get in a position where you and your raingear are separated by any significant distance. Storms can sometimes arrive with sudden fury, and rain can be ice cold. If you walk or travel more than a few minutes from your campsite, bring a day pack with raingear, along with some extra clothing, map and compass, and emergency items including a first aid kit.

Whenever you’re out in heavy rain, or precipitation continues for a long time, you’re bound to get at least a little wet even while wearing raingear. This is especially probable if you’re exercising heavily and sweating. The raingear will still provide some warmth, however, and wearing it is always preferable to having cold rain soak your body.
