SAND, SEA AND SPADE-LOADS OF SUN
İf these are three ingredients you want for your honeymoon, then Mauritius may just be the one. This Indian Ocean island has no shortage of blow-your-socks-off hotels, yet if you’re looking for a breezy boutique option with colonial decor – plus a Relais & Châteaux stamp of approval – then there’s only one 20° Sud.

Tucked behind a large carved wooden door, the first thing you see is the L-shaped pool, framed by weather-worn decking and a pretty humpback bridge. Days are spent being as lazy as you wish – either plastered to a sunbed under a palm tree, melting into a couple’s massage or gently bobbing around the reef on a paddleboat.
The restaurant has huge windows overlooking the twinkling ocean and a menu split between ‘fish’ and ‘farm’. The Lobster Symphony (an entire lobster beautifully presented) is so spectacular, the kitchen needs 24 hours’ prep time. Another foodie highlight is afternoon tea, where delicious home-made pastries are served. Don’t be fooled, though – the relaxed atmosphere doesn’t extend to the dress code for dinner (long trousers, closed shoes and shirt). This little gem oozes old-school ‘sense of occasion’, so don’t forget your finery. OUR KIND OF LUXE The hotel’s restored 1920s motorboat, which comes with its own chef, waiter and skipper, can be booked for day-long, kicking-back-on-the-ocean action. GO Susie Freeman Travel (susiefreemantravel.com) offers seven nights in a Cosy Room, half board, from £1,350 per person, including flights and transfers.
