History of Yerevan
Armenia is a beautiful country located in the Caucasus Mountains. The earliest archaeological evidence of human presence in the region dates back to the Paleolithic era. The Seljuq Turks captured Yerevan from the Byzantines in 1045 and proclaimed themselves rulers of Anatolia. In 1072, an Armenian nobleman named Peter I led a rebellion against Seljuq rule. He defeated a Seljuq army at Dvin and established the kingdom of Armenia. In 1078, Peter I defeated another Turkish army at Manzikert and thus established Armenian control of most of Anatolia. The Seljuqs continued to rule as the Sultanate of Rum until 1176 when they were defeated by the Seljuq brotherhood led by Kaykubad I with military support from Byzantium.
