The Tap Room cocktail bar is a particularly lively spot in the evenings – the Negronis and Margaritas are deliciously potent and are served up to an overture of live jazz and funk. And the food here is outstanding – try the succulent Kobe beef in The Royce, the adjacent in-house steak restaurant. Everything about this hotel is big and flamboyant – from the vast, crystal chandelier-clad ballrooms to the glistening marble-lined lobby.

If you can get one, the inward-facing suites with balconies overlooking the ornate central courtyard of water fountains, cobbles and delicate flowers are fabulous. It’s difficult not to be swept up by the glamour of this luxurious refuge at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, basking in 300 days of Californian sunshine each year. Away from the hotel, Pasadena is equally delightful – try Union Restaurant for fresh North Californian produce served with Italian finesse (the squid ink bombolotti is extremely tasty).
And if you’re not too overwhelmed by the heady cocktails and yummy nibbles, head to nearby Magnolia House, where the creamy guacamole and fiery Bloody Marys are famous among the locals.
