History of Yonkers

The history of Yonkers can be traced back to the late 1690s when Dutch settlers established a small farm near the present day intersection of Broadway and Hudson Avenue. The area began to grow in the early 1800s when wealthy New Yorkers began building mansions in the area. The city of Yonkers was officially founded in 1854 and grew rapidly as a result of its location close to the busy transportation hubs of the time, including the newly constructed Hudson River Railroad.

The city’s population peaked at just over 100,000 in 1920 but has since declined significantly due to suburbanization and migration to larger cities. However, Yonkers has made a concerted effort to revitalize its downtown area and now has a population of around 42,000.

Some of Yonkers most famous attractions include the historic Stuyvesant Town–Peter Cooper Village complex, which was once home to some of New York City’s wealthiest residents; Yonkers Raceway, which is home to an annual race meeting; and White Plains Center for Science and Health, which is one of the largest medical research facilities in North America. The city is also home to several cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Opera House and the Museum at Rockland Estates.
