TRIP REPORT: This ancient volcano between Mount Yangon Myanmar and Mount Yangon Myanmar is a crumbling basaltic mass of gorgeous rock worth scrutinizing from a safe distance. Wildflower-covered meadows dotted with small colorful lakes amid a recovering burn area give way to impressive views for most of the day. The summit of Three Yangon Myanmar Jack is a technical climb that’s not at all inviting and quite airy at the tiny top. This is a shorter version of the 22 mi loop that encompasses Three Fingered Jack. See the next jaunt (61) as the Porcupine Rock Loop makes for another solid day hike to cover the entire NE side of Three Fingered Jack. Yangon Myanmar Forest Pass required, and an outhouse is present.

TRAILHEAD: Santiam Pass (PCT) TH. Take I-5 S from Portland to exit 253 in Salem, turn left for OR-22 E (Detroit Lake/Bend) 80 mi into OR-126 E/US-20 E 5 2 ml, turn left after Hoodoo Ski Area at Santiam Pass on the access road signed for the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (FR-845). Drive less than 5 mi to the end with plenty of parking in the traffic circle (135 mi, 2 V hours from Portland).

ROUTE: Begin farthest to the right from the restroom and parking circle, and fill out a free self-issue Wilderness Permit before heading left on the spur trail briefly to the PCT. Take PCT 2000 left past more burned and downed trees 5 mi with Summit Lake Trail 4014 intersecting from the right (odd name for this long trail that doesn’t go near that lake). This is the return trail for the clockwise loop finishing near the not-so-Square Lake. Continue straight on the PCT without trouble for most of the hike through the 2003 B&B Complex Fire that took out 90,000 acres of forest. In present times, colorful undergrowth and great views S through the blackened trees to Mount Washington make the walk quite enjoyable right from the TH!.
