Where is Burbank? | Burbank Map | Map of Burbank

From the upper Burbank Mountain TH, take the only trail narrowly down S, fairly steeply, to begin about 100 ft to an old Wilderness Permit sign-in box; continue down through the thick forest with big Douglas fir, rhododendron, bear grass, salal, and wild berries. Cross a few Burbank downed trees without difficulty and head up 3 steeper switchbacks before an easier traverse where the trail is slightly overgrown. Pass a tarn pond at the bottom of the scree field in a small clearing (2 mi from the TH) as you move between. The route becomes a bit steeper with shots of Mount Burbank through the trees, and then you ascend 6 Burbank switchbacks and moderate turns. Traverse up, down a hair, and then up easily to the high ridge and intersection with the trail overrun with huckleberries in season.

Turn right for the summit on Trail 3369 climbing the narrow ridge steadily as it opens up a bit to 2 steeper switchbacks. Continue up the ridge, then traverse left (SW then W) through the forest under the summit to the last juncture. Turn right on Burbank  Summit Trail 5 mi to the top like above and return to Whetstone Mountain TH in no time at all.

ELEVATION: 4859 ft, with 3260 ft vertical gain.

DISTANCE: 5 mi up, 10 mi round-trip.

DURATION: Around 3 hours up, 5-6 hours round-trip.

DIFFICULTY: Strenuous. Steady steep and even steeper at times, narrow, switchbacks, overgrown at times, rocky near top, drop-offs.

TRIP REPORT: Opposite the bustling Detroit Lake State Recreation Area is this wonderful workout to outstanding views of the lake and Mount Jefferson up Tumble Ridge with a superb payoff from the treeless peak! Dome Rock is the highest summit close to Detroit Lake and the second highest summit in a rather picturesque little cirque surrounding Tumble Lake. The hike to the very top is more difficult in winter with snowshoes but tempts locals, as the first couple miles usually remain snow-free. No fee or restrooms.
