Surfing holidays can be an amazing experience. You’ll get the chance to push yourself, and try new waves, all whilst (hopefully) enjoying a beautiful location. However, it’s important to remember to pack everything you will need for your trip, otherwise you could find yourself having to pay out for expensive items whilst you’re away. Whilst a wetsuit, surfboard, and big beach towel are likely at the top of your list, keep reading for a list of five often forgotten items that you should consider packing.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is one item that many surfers forget, and then immediately regret it after spending a whole day surfing underneath the scorching hot sun. Not only is sunburn uncomfortable, but it can also stop you from enjoying your holiday, and getting out on the waves. Purchase a good, waterproof brand of sunscreen before you travel, and make sure to apply it every morning before you surf. It’s wise to top it up whenever you have the chance too.

Surf Forecast

Okay, so you probably can’t pack a surf forecast, but it’s a good idea to install an app that will let you know the surfing conditions ahead of time. Depending on how long you’re travelling for, you should be able to get a pretty decent forecast in the days before you travel, but an app will provide you with up to the minute information as and when you need it.

First Aid Kit

Whether you plan on surfing from the beach, or taking a boat trip out to a secret location, you’ll want to ensure you have a first aid kit on hand in case of cuts, scrapes, or (hopefully not) larger injuries. Even if you’re not planning on being too far away from civilisation, you should at least pack some bandages, sterile dressings, antiseptic wipes, and a needle kit.

Food and Drink

It’s important to stay hydrated and refuel whilst surfing, otherwise you won’t be able to perform at your best. With most surfing destinations being warm places, consider packing some cooler ice packs that you can use to keep your sports drinks and sandwiches cold whilst you surf. This will not only keep you hydrated and feeling good, but it will also save you money on expensive beachside cafes.

Ding Repair Kit

If you are transporting your surfboard, whether by car, train, or plane, it’s likely that it may not end up at its final destination in the same great condition it was in when you packed it. For this reason, it’s wise to pack a ding repair kit that will help you patch up any problems before you hit the waves. Keep in mind, though, that if you’re flying, two part resins are prohibited on most airlines so, purchase a repair kit that comes with one part sun resin instead.

If you’re about to embark on the trip of a lifetime, don’t ruin it by forgetting to pack the above essential items. Being prepared will be worth it when you arrive.
